Sport & outdoor activities
In the city ...
Eindhoven and the surrounding region have a great deal on offer with
regard to sports and outdoor activities. The itinerary for the visiting
sportsman reflects the importance the region’s inhabitants attach to
sport. It is not for nothing that the inhabitants of the province Brabant
won more medals at the Olympics in Australia than the rest of the
Netherlands combined! Beside the many sports facilities within the city,
there are also some very spectacular areas of natural beauty in the
immediate vicinity of the city.
Ice Sports Centre Eindhoven Ice skating is
a national passion in the Netherlands. The Ice Sports Center in Eindhoven
has no less than 8400 square meters of ice, divided into: three “free”
rinks, an ice hockey rink, a training rink and a 400 meter rink. There are
activities such as a disco ice dance every Friday evening, old fashioned
family skating on Sundays and…..ice skating lessons! You’ll have to try it
at least once as part of your Dutch experience!
Indoor Skate Park AREA 51 From ice skates
to roller skates: this two thousand square meter venue has Europe’s
biggest wooden skatebowl (22 meters wide, 22 meters long and 3 meters
deep). Beside this MU Bowl there are also halfpipes, ramps and fun boxes
to be found in this skate park.
Roller Skating As you may have deduced
from the above, skating is very popular in Eindhoven. For the rollerskater
or rollerblader a number of interesting routes have been mapped out, from
city routes to countryside tours. Information about these routes, as well
as addresses for skate and skeeler rental, can be found at the VVV Tourist
Information Center.
Indoor Sports Centre Eindhoven To the
south of the Genneper Parks you will find the Indoor Sports Center
Eindhoven, the largest indoor sports facility in the Netherlands. European
and World Championship events are regularly hosted here and are worth a
visit, although you can also opt to use the facilities for your own
enjoyment. The Genneper Parks itself also offer many recreational
activities. Here you will find the Tongelreep Swimming Paradise, the Ice
Sports Center, a golf and mini-golf course, stablesm, a sauna and a
multitude of cycling and walking routes.
More fun Can be had at the mountaineering
hall with 165 different climbing routes to sample or at the spectacular
indoor carting track.
Water activities De Tongelreep is the
Netherlands’ biggest subtropical indoor swimming paradise. For further
aquatic fun visit the nearby Aquabest Recreation Park for surfing,
water-skiing, diving or canoeing.
Guided tour Philips Stadium Home of PSV,
one of the Netherland’s top players in the First Division, currently
coached by Guus Hiddink. Located between Eindhoven’s city center and
Business School Notenboom. A guided tour is a must for soccer fans.
Cycling For Eindhoven and the surrounding
region a “Cycling Route Network” has been developed. This system allows
you to link any number of short trajectories into your own unique cycling
route, allowing you to decide for yourself on duration and difficulty.
Information on bicycle hire can be found at the VVV Tourist Information
Center.
Near the city ...
De Kempen and de Peel To the south-west of
Eindhoven is “de Kempen”, a large area of outstanding natural beauty that
carries on across the border into Belgium. To the south-east of Eindhoven
you will find “de Peel”, another area of picturesque scenery. There is
abundant nature here in the form of woods, extensive heathlands, meres and
small rivers.
De Peel is known for the peat that used to be cut there and exported
across Europe. Here and there you will stumble accross reminders of the
days of the peat-cutters. De Kempen is known for its central position in
the Dutch cigar industy, it is still possible to see how cigars are made
traditionally, as well as more modern production methods.
Small typical Brabant villages can be found in these areas where it is
possible to sample the Burgundian atmosphere of easy-going amiability
and/or taste some of the locally brewed regional beers. Many of the
villages have local museums, historic farms, watermills and windmills and
a few castles. One of these villages, Nuenen, was home to Vincent van Gogh
for a while, he painted the world-famous “The Potato Eaters” canvas here
in his early years.
The rich nature and cultural heritage of this area can be reached by
bicycle from Eindhoven and is very suited to exploration by bicycle or
mountain bike.
